The Meadowlark, At the height of his career, the distraction of frequent visitors, models, assistants and clients in Mr. French’s main studio prompted the sculptor to build a second studio at Chesterwood in 1905. Here, in this cool, quiet, secluded space, French found the ideal atmosphere for the intense concentration necessary for his work. After French’s death in 1931, the studio was adapted for use as a summer residence. Some of French’s original line drawings and notes can still be found on the walls of this artist’s studio. The Meadowlark was renovated a few years ago, and decorated by The Red Lion Inn to accommodate guests looking for a private, non-traditional overnight experience. The Meadowlark boasts a large north skylight, spacious living room, small kitchen, a full bath, and a large deck off the back. The Meadowlark is available for rentals from late spring through fall, and reservations may be made by telephoning The Red Lion Inn at 413-298-5545 or through their web site: www.redlioninn.com/rli/meadowlark.html. Guests staying at the Meadowlark enjoy temporary membership in the Friends of Chesterwood, including free admission to the property throughout their stay.
