Daniel
Chester French:
Transforming a Nation Through Sculpture
New for 2001, Chesterwood's
Barn Gallery Exhibition is called Daniel Chester French, Transforming
a Nation Through Sculpture. A showcase of important works that evoke
the breadth and scope of French's career, the exhibition is designed to
dramatize the scale and proportion of these four core monuments:
- The Minute Man
at Concord, Massachusetts 1875
- The Continents,
United States
Custom House, New York, 1906
- Samuel F. Dupont
Memorial,
the fountain at Dupont Circle, Washington DC, 1921
- Abraham Lincoln
at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC 1922
The exhibit explores
Daniel Chester French's creative process, his style and the social context
for his work.
The exhibition is
supported by resources that describe contemporary and historic public
sculpture and sculpture conservation. Visitors can utilize interactive
programs, online access to the National Inventory of American Sculpture
and a video presentation about the sculptural process. Adjacent to the
exhibition is our new Museum Shop, which offers reproductions of French's
work, plus a variety of gifts, stationery, toys and books.
