General Joseph Hooker, 1898-1903 (1902) by Daniel Chester French (with Edward Clark Potter, who sculpted the horse)

Location: The State House, Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description: Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker (1814-1879), West Point graduate, was the fifth of seven consecutive generals, and the only Massachusettsian, in command of the Army of the Potomac. After losing the battle of Chancellorsville to Lee, he asked to be relieved, fought well again in subsequent battles, and, because he was Northern District commander when Lincoln died, led the honor guard at the funeral of Lincoln in Springfield, IL. The statue was commissioned by the Commonwealth.
