Statue of General William Francis Bartlett, 1903-1904 (1904)

Location: Memorial Hall, State House, 24 Beacon Street, Boston

Description: William Francis "Frank" Bartlett (1840-1876), one of the youngest Civil War generals and the most outstanding soldier of Massachusetts, was known as the colonel who rode into battle with a crutch slung over his back, for he had lost a leg in battle. Herman Melville and John Greenleaf Whittier memorialized him in poetry; French, in sculpture, portraying him saluting the colors. The statue was commissioned by the Commonwealth.
