John Harvard (1608-1638), graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge University,
and Puritan clergyman, was the first donor to the college, which was founded

his generous bequest of money and books. French chose a lineal descendant
of the early settlers to pose for the face of the idealized portrait.
