Statue of John Harvard, 1883-1884 (1884)

Location: Harvard Yard, west side of University Hall, Harvard University, Cambridge.

Description: John Harvard (1608-1638), graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, and Puritan clergyman, was the first donor to the college, which was founded in 1636, opened in 1638 and named in his honor in 1639 in gratitude for his generous bequest of money and books. French chose a lineal descendant of the early settlers to pose for the face of the idealized portrait.
