Melvin Memorial, 1906-1909 (1907)

Location: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Bedford St. (Rte. 62), Concord. Note: The grave of Daniel Chester French is in this cemetery, fairly close to the Melvin Memorial.

Description: French's finest war monument commemorates three brothers who died in the Civil War. Carved deeply in relief is an angel, "The Mourning Victory," enveloped in an American flag and holding a laurel branch, emerging from darkness into light and gazing down at three tablets. A Carrara marble replica of "The Mourning Victory" is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
