Slocum Memorial, 1908-1912 (1909)

Location: On Rhododendron Path, off Poplar Ave., Forest Hills Cemetery, Morton St. (State 203 Highway), Jamaica Plain, Boston.

Description: Daniel Chester French supervised this work, which was executed by his former pupil and the only woman to be his assistant, Evelyn Beatrice Longman (1874-1954). It recalls French's Melvin Memorial, a figure in deep relief emerging from the stone. Longman's best-known work is the gilded colossal, The Spirit of Communication (1916), originally atop the AT&T Building in New York.
