Wendell Phillips, 1913-1915 (1914)

Location: on the Boylston St. Mall of the Public Garden, Boston

Description: Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), Harvard graduate, orator, reformer, lawyer, and abolitionist, whose father was the first mayor of Boston, introduced the direct and colloquial manner upon the American public platform. After the abolition of slavery, he fought for prohibition and woman suffrage. His speeches before audiences showing favor or dissent have been likened to exhibitions of gladiatorial skill.
