The Casting Room
The Casting room is a separate room off of the main studio space. This is where French converted his small clay and plastilene models into plaster casts. From these plaster casts, the bronze or marble sculptures were created. In this small room there are storage cabinets, a sink, and a workbench. The casting room took on a messy aspect during the busy casting process, with a melange of tools, blue and white plaster, burlap, Vaseline, and many other materials used during the process. As a representation of the sculpting process there is a sculpture in various phases of Stefan Lorant by French's daughter, Margaret, on display.
Plaster models begin when the sculptor creates a small clay model as a sketch. Once this clay model is satisfactory, it is then covered in wet plaster. Once the plaster dries, it can be pulled apart in two block pieces leaving the negative of what the clay model was inside of it.
